Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes: The Cantina Band, Fully Explained

Everyone can hum it. Almost nobody can name it. The most famous band in the galaxy has been playing the same forty-five seconds of music since 1977, and the majority of the people humming along could not tell you a single member’s name.

The band

They are Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes. Seven Bith musicians — the pale, large-craniumed species with no nose to speak of — led by Figrin D’an on the kloo horn. The rest of the lineup works instruments with names that sound like someone fell asleep on a keyboard: the Dorenian Beshniquel, the fanfar, the ommni box.

Their genre is called jizz. We did not name it. We are simply reporting.

The song has a name and nobody uses it

The track everyone calls “the Cantina Song” is properly titled “Mad About Me.” It has been called that for four decades. It has never once worked.

This is the fate of every bar band: you can title the song whatever you like, but the audience will name it after the room.

Nobody in that bar is listening

Watch the scene again, but watch the room instead of the leads. The Modal Nodes are genuinely swinging. The crowd is doing everything except listening. Smuggling deals are being negotiated. Someone is getting an arm removed at the bar. A man is being threatened over a seating arrangement.

And the band plays through all of it. Through the death threats, through the lightsaber, through the dismemberment — not a missed bar. That is not a novelty act. That is professionalism under conditions no touring musician on Earth has ever faced.

The guy who was almost in the band

Our favorite detail in the whole story is Lirin Car’n. He was not a permanent member. He was the backup kloo horn player, brought in to fill out the sound when the group needed a fuller arrangement.

Which means somewhere in that galaxy there is a musician who was almost in the most recognizable band in cinematic history, and instead has to explain at parties that he sat in occasionally. Every scene has a Lirin Car’n. Most of them are very good players.

So we applied for the gig

Our position is that Chalmun’s Cantina needs new material, and we are available. We put it in writing, in the form of a song, which is the only application process we know.

Figrin, if you’re reading this: no disrespect. Forty years is a long residency. Take a night off. We’ll cover it.
